I love helping women get clarity around their dream career and formulate an action plan to get from where they are now to where they want to be. I see so many people experience the extreme dissatisfaction that comes with being in a job that doesn’t light your heart on fire. Our jobs, our careers are our opportunities to use our talent and passion to provide value to our communities and ultimately help each other out.
However, I also know that we all have to start somewhere and that the starting place is not our dream job. I’ve been there and have the t-shirt to prove it.
Bridge jobs = the jobs we take that help us to get from where we are now to where we want to be. Whether it is your day job that helps finance your hobby cum passion fuelled business or it’s the position you currently hold whilst you are working your way up the ladder – these are examples of bridge jobs. It can be really hard to feel 100% fulfilled and satisfied in your bridge job because it doesn’t tick all of your boxes.
So then, how can you love your bridge job?
One of my amazing mentors, Sharon Pearson, gave me a piece of advice that carries so much wisdom and provides support for those struggling in their bridge jobs.
Treat where you are working now like it was your own company.
Act as if the business was your very own and that you had built it from the ground up. Treasure it, nurture it, maintain it and help it to grow.
When we embrace this way of thinking, we take ownership and responsibility for our actions and results. We stop being the victim or feeling insignificant and instead, become a vital piece of the machine. This puts us in a much better position to manifest our dream job much quicker. This also means we create our own happiness in whatever position we find ourselves in. No longer do we tie our happiness with our bridge job, we discover how to be happy regardless of what job we have.
We also learn about what it takes to maintain a company and lead a team. These vital skills are transferable and will be hugely beneficial when you strike it out on your own. Furthermore, when you give your employer so much value and leave the company in high regard, you will already have raving testimonials and referrals.
So own where you are at right now. Embrace it. Bring your whole self to it. Trust that it is a vital part of your journey and appreciate it like the gift it truly is. The stepping stone to your dreams.
